Garden bulbs
Bulbs for the garden can add a touch of colour and interest almost all the year round, that is, if you plant bulbs for each season. Within this section you can find a wide variety of bulbs which may not necessarily fit in to other groups. Bulbs of interest, rarity and a few selected bulb mixes have been added to this list and are sure to add a splash of colour and excitement to your garden.
How to grow
Many bulbs are very rewarding plants to grow and given the correct conditions they are sure to thrive. Due to their easy to grow nature they are great fun when
gardening with children and make excellent
container plants. There is a bulb for almost every position or soil condition and by following planting instructions you will get a great deal from your purchase.
Position
Bulbs vary in their needs and as such you will need to follow the specific planting requirements. Most bulbs enjoy a sunny spot with some shelter from heavy winds. Woodland bulbs will require more shade as opposed to many of the tropical Summer flowering bulb species.
Soil
Most bulbs require a free draining but moist soil and to get the best from your bulbs you should incorporate horticultural grit when planting them. This is especially true of sub-tropical and tropical bulbs, which may rot in wet winters. Do not plant bulbs in earth previously occupied by the same species as diseases and pests may remain in the soil. The addition of well-rotted garden compost or
multi-purpose compost to soil is sure to improve drainage and help improve growth.
Care
Ensure that you water plants as necessary and feed with a general
fertiliser before and after flowering. Allow plant leaves to yellow and fade naturally after flowering to get the best from your bulbs if they are to flower in the next year.
Top Tip
When growing bulbs in containers you can layer a mix of spring, summer and autumn flowering bulbs to make for a year round display. Bulb
containers are made specifically for growing bulbs.
